Update on Japan Earthquake: More dead, others missing
The following is mostly a summary of the information contained in an article on www.CNN.com/asia titled, "Japan rescuers search for quake missing"
- At least 5 dead, 166 injured, at least 11 still missing (but all numbers keep rising)
- occurred at 8:43am, Sat, June 14, 2008, with epicenter in southern Iwate Prefecture
- magnitude report ranging from 6.9 - 7.2
- Emperor Akihito extended his sympathy wishing everyone to promptly be rescued and peace return
- 10 landslides documented, one covering a spa in Miyagi, where the 7 visitors remain
- more than 106 homes damaged, at least 78 seriously
- 2 bridges broken and roads blocked in 13 places
- most deaths from landslides, but 1 man's death from being stuck by truck after rushing out of his home
- highways buckled (all express ways in Miyagi were closed), bullet trains stopped, but 2 nuclear plants in the area were unharmed (they just shut down)
